What You Need

  • 1 pkg. Johnsonville┬« Mild Italian Sausage Meat
  • 1 large pizza crust, homemade or store-bought
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella
  • fresh basil leaves, to taste
  • 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil (optional)
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 can (796 mL/28 oz) Italian plum tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp Italian spices (or a mix of dry oregano and basil)
  • 1 pinch crushed red chili peppers
  • salt and fresh cracked black pepper

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Shape sausage meat into 20 small meatballs using 1 Tbsp each. Arrange on a cooking sheet lined with aluminum foil and bake in oven for 10 minutes or until golden brown.

  2. For the sauce: Meanwhile, in a saucepan, warm olive oil over low heat and gently cook the garlic (do not brown). Pour tomatoes into a bowl and crush by hand or using a potato masher. Transfer to saucepan along with remaining ingredients, reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes or until thickened.

  3. Place pizza dough on a cooking sheet. Spread generously with pizza sauce. Arrange meatballs on pizza and sprinkle with mozzarella.

  4. Bake 10 minutes or until crust is golden and cheese has melted. Decorate with previously hand-torn basil leaves. If desired, drizzle with a little olive oil and serve right away.
