Cheese and Sausage Scalloped Potatoes

What's one way to make scalloped potatoes even better? Add sausage! This recipe has all your favourite scalloped potato flavours, like butter, onion and cheese, with the extra flavour kick of our Mild Italian Sausage Meat. A great option for a dinner side-kick or potluck hero, our Cheese and Sausage Scalloped Potatoes will wow the whole crowd.

What You Need

  • 1 package Johnsonville Mild Italian Sausage Meat
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup white onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 4 cups milk, 2% or whole
  • 1 1/2 tsp dry Italian dressing mix
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese, approximate
  • 5-6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 green onion, chopped for garnish


  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a casserole dish and set aside.

  2. Cook sausage meat according to package instructions and set aside.

  3. In a medium-size sauce pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 5 minutes, or until onions are translucent. Add flour and cook for additional 3-4 minutes, whisking regularly. Add milk and increase temperature to medium-high heat. Stir continuously as sauce comes to a boil. Add dry italian dressing mix and cream cheese. Keep stirring until evenly mixed. Set aside.

  4. Create  even layers in casserole dish starting with half the sliced potatoes, followed by half the sausage, then half the sauce and lastly with half the cheddar cheese. Repeat layers with remaining half of ingredients. Top with chopped green onion.

  5. Bake in oven, while covered with tinfoil, for 50-80 minutes, checking at the 50 minute mark to test if potatoes are cooked. Once potatoes are cooked, place back in over uncovered for another 8-10 minutes. Let sit for 5 minutes and serve.
